Creative Women This series celebrates women on the cusp of creativity—moments when impulse rises above expectation, when an act is done purely for the self rather than duty or demand. Depicted singing, knitting, drawing, or reading, they are represented as they are, absorbed in their own presence. Painted on wasli, these works stand in contrast to the history of women portrayed as ornamental, or, in the case of Asian women, absent altogether. Through direct and intimate observation of friends and family, the series creates a dialogue between these lived moments and the wider history of women’s representation.
Walk to School Series This is a group of paintings that depict the remembered experience of my daily journey to Art School. Past favourite sights and buildings, and into heaving streets laden with energy, noise colour, smells and obstacles for a lone woman. From a discriminatory public transport system and an indifference to unaccompanied women, not mention bomb blasts; going to art school in Lahore can be quite a challenge.
